Ceramic Masterpieces
How Exactly Are They Made?

Inspired by the beautiful razor clam shells and the fragile broken layers that can be seen in pieces of oyster shells I begin to draw.

Taking white stoneware clay I begin to form the outside of the piece, carving, shaping until I am eventually happy with the form I will then allow the clay to gently dry out.

Step 1

Next is to make the paper thin porcelain shards, black and white to work in contrast with the clay.

Using a lava glaze I slowly fill each form with these shards.

The Finishing Touch

Finally, when all the firing is done I take each piece and slowly reveal what is hidden away under the glaze creating a final piece which is completly unique
